Ulleung’s Squid Fishermen Bolster Remote Island’s Employment

Ulleung Island in the East Sea had Korea’s highest employment rate again in the second half of last year because practically everyone works in squid fishing.

The remote island has held the nominal top spot for nine years.

According to Statistics Korea on Tuesday, Ulleung boasted an employment rate of 81.1 percent, down from 85 percent in the first half.

“The mainstay squid fishing industry of Ulleung Island is not affected by seasonal factors, which helps it maintain a stable employment rate,” Statistics Korea said.

But the employment rate of Korea’s seven major cities stood at just 57.8 percent, up 1.1 percentage points from the first half.
